Discernment is a lifelong practice and most fruitful when we make it a daily habit, seeking the wisdom of God on Jesus’ Way. We invite you to use this guide to make discernment part of your daily routine. The structure, prayers, readings, wisdom teachings, and questions for each day are suggestions. We drew from the wisdom of theologians, elders, and spiritual leaders across traditions, cultures, and lived experiences to enrich the practice of daily discernment. We also include a variety of translations of the Psalms and the New Testament, inviting readers to encounter Scripture through diverse linguistic and cultural lenses.

We invite you to adapt this daily prayer to your context so that you discern fruitfully. For each prayer, we suggest setting aside five to ten minutes and praying in a place where you can concentrate and really listen for God’s voice. You can pray these alone or with a group.

The Daily Discernment Guide is part of A Catholic Organizer’s Guide to Discernment, a 120-page workbook that provides a framework for groups and individuals seeking to discern with more awareness of the vocabulary, core elements, and varieties of discernment in the Christian tradition. It focuses on the connection discernment has with social justice, that is, the concrete ways God calls us in our specific contexts to build power and liberatory systems for God’s Kin-dom.
