Community leaders from the Coalition for Spiritual and Public Leadership announced they reached an agreement with ICE and the Department of Homeland Security to allow daily pastoral visits inside the west suburban facility. Those visits began last Friday.
“This agreement represents a recognition of the human dignity and basic human rights of our detained sisters and brothers,” CSPL Executive Director Michael N. Okińczyc-Cruz said in a statement.

On Holy Thursday afternoon, Father Juan Vargas knelt on the floor of the Broadview Immigration and Customs Enforcement processing facility west of Chicago and washed the feet of a man in shackles. Sister Alicia Gutierrez, SH, distributed Communion. Father David Inczauskis, SJ, and Father Paul Joseph Keller, CMF, offered pastoral care to thirteen other detained migrants wearing handcuffs and ankle chains. Outside, fifty Catholic faithful stood in rain and heavy wind, praying the Rosary and singing, waiting for the pastoral delegation to emerge.

March 9, 2026 | This dialogue — just one day after International Women’s Day — highlighted the remarkable work Catholic women are doing around the world to promote the common good, as well as the opportunities ahead to continue to advance women’s leadership in the Church. Women lead major social service organizations, hospital systems, and educational institutions. They have leading roles in dioceses large and small, and in countless parishes and organizations across the United States. They are scholars, business leaders, policymakers, legislators, journalists, activists, and advocates for the principles of Catholic social teaching. Yet as the Church has recently acknowledged, women still “encounter obstacles in obtaining a fuller recognition of their charisms, vocation, and place in all the various areas of the Church’s life.” This dialogue brought together Catholic women leaders to discuss how the Church can better acknowledge the richness of women’s current and future contributions to advance the common good.

As a Catholic organization, we had long honored him for his Catholic leadership and commitment to justice, but now we cannot ignore the harm and suffering inflicted upon survivors. We unequivocally condemn sexual violence, emotional abuse, and the structures of patriarchy that enable them. These revelations remind us that no legacy, no matter how celebrated, can excuse wrongdoing.
