Interfaith Prayer March - Great Lakes Naval Station

On Saturday, September 20, 2025, we continued the momentum of our People’s Mass and returned to the Great Lakes Naval Station—this time joining with people of many faiths who share our commitment to solidarity and liberation, and who also bring their faith traditions into the public square as acts of resistance. Hundreds of people came out in prayerful, peaceful unity, standing against ICE and militarization, and to proclaim liberation! Representatives of seven congregations of multiple faiths offered prayers and a Rabbi blew the ram’s horn trumpet, or shofar, symbolizing the blasts that helped bring down the walls of Jericho, as the group marched in circles around the Naval Station. Co-hosts included Arise Chicago, Chicago Workers Collaborative, Chicago Religious Leadership Network for Latin America (CRLN), JCUA, Live Free Illinois, ICIRR and Mano-a-Mano.

People’s Mass for Justice + Peace - Great Lakes Naval Station

Despite the torrential storm last Saturday morning, around 300 people gathered in prayerful solidarity for our People's Mass for Justice + Peace outside the Great Lakes Naval Station in North Chicago.

Our multi-lingual, multi-racial, multi-cultural, and multi-generational 𝘮𝘪𝘴𝘢 𝘱𝘰𝘱𝘶𝘭𝘢𝘳 carried on this legacy of pursuing holiness through peaceful, courageous political action.

Together, and following the actions of Jesus, we bore prophetic witness, practicing courageous, nonviolent resistance against today’s oppressive empire. Faith means solidarity, courage, and liberation in the very footsteps of Christ.

WGNTV - Priests, nuns, faith leaders protest ICE actions outside Chicago field office

As Mayor Brandon Johnson was defending Chicago’s sanctuary city status at a congressional hearing focused on immigration policies, a group of priests, nuns and lay leaders were gathering in protest outside the Chicago field office of Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

The midday Ash Wednesday gathering was organized by the Coalition for Spiritual and Public Leadership in protest of the arrests, detentions and deportations ICE has carried out since the start of the second Trump administration.

I learned about the national pilgrimage to the border for a weekend teach-in and action within my first few hours of working at CSPL. Immediately upon hearing about it I knew I wanted to go. Much of why I wanted to spend this year at CSPL is due to our work with immigrant leaders for immigration justice. Partaking in a national pilgrimage to the border in El Paso to learn and take action against the atrocities committed by the federal government originally felt easy to me—of course I would be going. As I learned and considered more about this pilgrimage, I quickly recognized the privilege associated with my unwavering desire and ability to embark on it.
